Massage Can Increase Vasodilation, Improve Performance, Recovery And Repair

Vasodilation refers to the widening or relaxation of blood vessels, which results in an increased blood flow and reduced resistance to blood flow. Vasodilation occurs when smooth muscles lining the blood vessels dilate and expand in diameter.

This expansion, and the increased volume of blood that can now flow through them, can make the blood vessels more visible and give them that “popped” appearance you may see in some horses during massage, hot weather or intense exercise. Increased vasodilation can aid in the regulation of body temperature, prepare muscles for activity, reduce swelling and decrease pain.

A variety of massage strokes and myofascial techniques can be used to encourage vasodilation. The increased delivery of essential oxygen and nutrients help to maintain strong and healthy muscles.

Vasodilation through massage can help prepare your horse for exercise or competition. The increase in blood flow to and around the muscles brings oxygen and nutrients that can provide muscles with an increase in energy and stamina. The increase in temperature caused by the vasodilation increases muscle elasticity, softens adhesions, increases range of motion and reduces tightness and pain. The increased functionality and elasticity reduce the chance of injury during your chosen activity.

Vasodilation aids in injury recovery. After injury or surgery, a build-up of metabolic wastes and excess fluids occurs around the area. A build-up of metabolic wastes and excess fluids can slow down recovery, and increase swelling and pain. Increasing vasodilation through full body massage results in an increase in blood flow around the body which helps to carry metabolic wastes and excess fluids away from the injury site and out through different nodes and glands within the body. Once metabolic wastes and excess fluids have been removed, the increased blood flow provides the injured area with an increase of nutrients that aid in repair and speed up recovery time. This process of reducing inflammation and increasing the supply of essential nutrients and energy also contributes to improved exercise recovery and faster healing of the micro-damage caused by exercise.

Harnessing the power of massage to increase vasodilation offers a multitude of benefits for your horse’s well-being. Beyond enhancing blood flow and oxygen delivery, it contributes to better muscle preparation, improved exercise performance, and accelerated recovery from injuries. By promoting vasodilation through thoughtful massage techniques, you’re supporting your horse’s overall health, functionality, and longevity.
