Understanding Muscle Adhesions

Muscle adhesions, also known as myofascial adhesions, are areas of fibrous tissue that form between the layers of muscle and connective tissue, known as fascia. These adhesions can occur as a result of muscle injury, overuse, lack of use or repetitive motion.

Muscle adhesions act like internal scar tissue, and the spots can become tight, stiff, and painful. Over time the muscles and tissues around the adhesion will tighten to protect the area, limiting your horse’s range of movement, pulling its body out of alignment and putting pressure on the muscles and joints. These adhesions are one of the most common forms of body pain.

Thankfully, manually manipulating these sore spots through massage can gently separate the stuck tissues, relieving pain, increasing range of motion and improving muscle function. Massage then presses circulation through the area, bringing vital nutrients and fluids to the area to promote healing and reduce the risk of future adhesions.

By being proactive and working with a great massage therapist you can help your horse be more balanced and comfortable and so sounder and more mentally balanced.

Massage helps the body relax, release, and re-align itself mentally, physically and neurologically for a more supple and athletic performance.

Benefits of massage with myofascial release include improved muscle function, improved joint alignment, improved self-awareness, mobilized fascia, an increase in stride length and range of motion, enhanced relaxation and improved overall performance and recovery.
