Possible Causes of Girth Sensitivity in Horses

If your horse reacts when you tighten the girth, ulcers might be the first concern—but they aren’t the only possible cause. Girthiness can stem from a variety of factors, including:

• Myofascial Restrictions – Tight, sore or restricted fascia, whether superficial or deep, can limit mobility and cause discomfort.

Examples:

• Serratus Ventralis Thoracis – This muscle supports the ribcage and can become sore due to poor saddle fit, posture, or compensatory movement patterns.

• Pectoral Muscles – These muscles support the thoracic cage from below. If they’re sore, girthing can exacerbate the discomfort.

• Elbow & Sternum Pain – Pressure from the girth can aggravate soreness in these areas, making girthing uncomfortable.

• Rib or Sternum Sensitivity – Previous injuries, tension, or restrictions in these areas can contribute to pain.

• Saddle Fit Issues – An ill-fitting saddle can create pressure points or restrict movement, leading to girthing discomfort.

• Withers Discomfort – A saddle that pinches, bruises or sits unevenly can cause pain that presents as girthiness.

• Gastric or Hindgut Discomfort – While ulcers are a common concern, bloating, gas, or other digestive issues can also contribute to sensitivity.

• Nerve Sensitivity – Some horses have heightened nerve sensitivity in the girth area, making even light pressure uncomfortable.

• Negative Associations – Past pain or rough handling during girthing can lead to a learned response, even after the initial issue is resolved.

• Postural Imbalances – Compensatory movement patterns or an inability to properly engage the thoracic sling can make muscle and fascia under the saddle and girth uncomfortable.

• Previous Injury – Old injuries may cause chronic discomfort or complicate saddle fit and overall movement.

If your horse reacts to girthing, assessing saddle fit, soft tissue health, and digestive function can help identify the root cause. Paying attention to when and how the reaction occurs can also provide valuable insights.
