Pros and Cons of Using Fly Boots

Top 5 Reasons to Use Fly Boots

  1. They offer excellent fly protection.
  2. Less stomping at flies = less wear and tear and fewer lost shoes.
  3. Nick and ding protection.
  4. They can be made into ice boots when needed.
  5. Less fly irritation = more metal relaxation.

Top 3 Reasons Not to Use Fly Boots

  1. Some horses just don’t like wearing them.
  2. Although rare, it is possible that something could get stuck in them or they could potentially get stuck on something (especially if they have developed holes) and cause an issue.
  3. They may hold more heat around the leg than if it were bare, especially in hot, humid climates. Since horses don’t have sweat glands in their legs, this could give owners a false sense of security, as the legs might be hot without showing obvious signs.
  4. If they aren’t taken off for daily checks they can hide injuries or infections.
  5. They can hold things like poop, goo, fungus and moisture against the leg.

Do you use them? If so, what do you like best (or least) about them?
